How to Build an Email List

I wanted to break down HOW to build an email list, as it’s helped me make my side biz @blackwalletorg a profitable biz. It’s easy to create & pretty powerful when done right. Building an email list helps you create an audience not dependent on a platform.

Let’s dive in!

1. Start with a Great Platform

I like Convertkit best. They have simple, text-based email templates that look and feel personal. Gone are the days of image-heavy, convoluted emails. Your email should be personal, with just a few links & TEXT-BASED with just a few images.

P.S. if you’re bootstrapping, start with Mailchimp. While ConverKit is paid, Mailchimp is free up to 2,000 subscribers. Once you hit a threshold, you can always switch. The most important thing is YOUR LIST.

Okay, now let’s talk about a LEAD MAGNET!

To get your emails list poppin’ you have to provide MASSIVE value FOR FREE. A lead magnet is an incentive that marketers offer to potential buyers in exchange for an email address. You can offer a digital download, such as a free PDF checklist, report, eBook, whitepaper. Ask your audience what they’re looking for.

  • SEMRush to find relevant content 
  • Facebook Group ask what they need
  • Ask your customers what content would help them

Convert this to a google doc and send it to a designer. They’ll convert it to PDF with a great cover you can promo. Now, think about your funnel, my favorite marketer, Russell Brunson talks about this in DOTCOM Secrets. You’ll need:

  • Website popup (only recommend exit intent, message me for details) or landing page
  • ConvertKit or Mailchimp integration 
  • Email template
  • Upsells

Now that your lead magnet is set up, you’re good to go! It’s time for outreach. Your lead magnets need to go everywhere. Link in your signature, ads on your website on sidebar, social media posts, featured image on blog articles.

Share it everywhere!

Lastly, develop your up-sells.

Now that you have their emails, you want to provide them with more value and paid products. Follow the 80/20 rule. 4 pieces of free content, 1 piece of promotional.
