Most folks still think branding starts with a logo. Like boom, slap a nice icon on the top left corner of the site and you’ve got a brand. Nah!
At 5Four, we’ve learned that branding starts with “clarity” not color palettes.
It starts with getting laser-specific about your story, your audience, your tone, and your positioning. When you’ve got that down? The visuals fall into place with ease. But skip that part, and you’re just decorating a house with no foundation.
Let’s walk through exactly how we approach brand design—without the guesswork.
1. Content First, Always.
Before we touch a pixel, we write.
Why? Because your content is the blueprint. A killer tagline? That becomes your hero section. A bold CTA? That drives your color accents. Your product descriptions, your origin story, your values all of that informs how the brand should feel.
Think of it like this, design is how it looks. But content is what gives it a voice.
When we work with a client, we use the Brand Discovery doc as the North Star. We pull out keywords, emotional cues, customer pain points and that all drives the design language.
A site that looks sleek but says nothing? Dead on arrival.
2. The Bento Box Brand Guide
Most startups don’t need a 60 page PDF explaining kerning and grid systems. They need something lean and mean.
That’s where our Bento Box Brand Guide comes in. A compact, high-impact identity kit that packs everything you need onto one clean, accessible page.
This is our one-page, plug-and-play identity system that has just the essentials:
Logo variations (horizontal, stacked, icon-only)
Brand colors (with hex codes)
Typography rules
Icon and image style
It’s small, but mighty. It gives startups the consistency they need without overwhelming them. Plus, it’s quick to create and super easy to hand off.
If you’re building brands for fast-moving startups, this approach is the cheat code.
3. Templates + Touch
Y’all know I’m systems-first. We build most of our brand kits in Figma. That way, clients don’t just get a static file they get a living system they can edit, reuse, and grow with.
But here’s the thing, it’s not just about the template. It’s about the touch.
We explain every design decision. Why that font? Why that icon shape? Why that tone of yellow instead of bright orange?
We don’t just drop off the files, we walk clients through the reasoning so they own the brand, not just rent it.
4. Collaboration is Core
This part’s important: even when we build brands for ourselves, we follow the exact same process.
Our indie game studio, Glowing Cheetah, went through the full branding pipeline. Discovery doc. Copywriting. Bento Box. Design handoff. All of it.
Why? Because a good system works for everyone. And when you treat your own internal work like client work, you build stronger, repeatable systems that scale with you.
The Bottom Line
Branding isn’t about looking pretty. It’s about alignment between message, tone, and visuals.
A strong brand system doesn’t just look dope, it communicates. It invites. It tells a story without saying a word.
So next time someone says, “Let’s start with the logo,” hit pause. Start with the story. Then let design follow the message.
And if you want that Bento Box Brand Guide template for your next project? Hit me up—I got you.
